Harvard graduate students authorize a strike; no date set

Date July 6, July 6, The Faculty of Arts and Sciences FAS will bring up to 40 percent of undergraduates to campus for the fall semester, including all first-year students, Harvard announced today. University President Larry Bacow, FAS Edgerley Family Dean Claudine Gay, and Danoff Dean of the College Rakesh Khurana co-authored a message to the FAS community that described the path forward, allowing first-years the opportunity to adjust to college academics and to begin creating connections with faculty and other classmates, while learning on campus in September. Students on campus will move out before Thanksgiving and complete reading and exams periods from home. Should only one cohort return in the spring, priority will be given to seniors. Bacow, Gay, and Khurana lamented that the overall decision would be particularly disappointing for sophomores and juniors who face a year away from campus after shifting to remote learning for half the past spring semester when they moved to learning from home as Harvard quickly de-densified because of the COVID pandemic. In recognition of this difficult situation, the president and deans extended to students who study away from campus for the full academic year the opportunity to return next summer to take two tuition-free courses at Harvard Summer School. Given this uncertainty, we determined that our fall plan must enable us to bring back as many students as possible while providing sufficient margin to accommodate an escalation of the prevalence of COVID in our area. The message provided details on the cost of attendance.

The move comes as the Obama administration investigates the handling of accusations of sexual assault at dozens of colleges, including Harvard. The ban clarifies an earlier policy that labeled sexual and romantic relationships between professors and the students they teach as inappropriate, but did not explicitly prohibit professors from having relationships with students they did not teach.

Besides banning sexual and romantic relationships between professors and all undergraduates, the policy also bans such relationships between teaching staff, such as graduate students, and the students who fall under their supervision or evaluation. It says that intimate relationships between students and professors make consent hard to determine because of the unequal power dynamic, and leave institutions vulnerable to allegations of sexual harassment.

After the courts found in the s that universities could be financially liable for sexual harassment, many institutions — among them, the University of California and Yale — adopted formal policies forbidding sexual or romantic relationships between faculty and students. Home Page World U.

In the late s major universities were recruiting low-income or so-called ghetto blacks. Not so today. If Harvard has set the pattern for others, it appears likely that most blacks currently enrolled at our elite institutions of higher education come from middle- or high-income families.

Harvard instructed students not to return after spring break, which starts this University officials said students who must remain on campus due to not have high-speed Internet connections, up-to-date laptops, and other.

Love at HBS is a celebration of the diverse expressions of love that exist on our campus and in the world around us. This project showcases stories of love from students at Harvard Business School. We started off long-distance—flights between New York City and Minneapolis, lengthy FaceTime calls, and random gifts characterized the first seven months of our relationship. It was difficult, but we knew we had something special.

By chance, Laura inched her way closer to me. She was tapped for a role in Philadelphia, and I was serendipitously staffed on a project there for over a year. We spent every weekend together. Hours spent cooking, laughing, and watching movies turned into hours studying for the GMAT as we jointly decided to pursue our MBA degrees. It was during this time that I crazily decided to propose to her and secure our future together. Now, as HBS students, we fondly reflect on our long and winding journey that showed us that our love is enduring.

Now, this is a story all about how our lives got flipped-turned upside down. In true HBS fashion, our first conversation was a bit awkward, driven by Rabbiya not Carlos, who has the social graces of a pre-marriage Prince Harry and the jaw-dropping good looks of a young Jon Hamm…see photo. We both had a passion for fun and humor, much to the dismay of our professors, who began cold calling us to scare us out of having distracting personal discussions during class.

AP — Protesters wearing the colors of both Harvard and Yale staged a sit-in at midfield of Yale Bowl during halftime of the th edition of the annual football rivalry known as The Game. Most walked off after about an hour with a police escort; about who remained were arrested. Other signs referred to Puerto Rican debt and the treatment of the Uighurs. Between 20 and 30 people were arrested, released and given a court date, protest organizers said. Rachel Sadoff, a junior at Harvard, said about students from the two universities planned to participate and about more who had been sitting in the stands joined in.

It was , and John Winslow was about to go to sea. Any voyage was a risky, time-consuming endeavor in those days, so before he left he sat down to write an important letter. I have therefore put in my pretensions for my son. Winslow was writing on behalf of his son, Pelham. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Harvard relied on strict class rankings that weren’t based on grades, or even tuition.

Rather, the school treated students differently based on the perceived social stature of their parents—rankings that colored every aspect of college life. It affected everything from where students sat to the order in which they were called to recite. Housing decisions were made on the basis of rank, and those of a lower rank were expected to defer to their more highly ranked fellow students. Rank even determined who marched when during commencement. There, students had long been sorted into groups based on the amount of tuition their parents paid.

They wore glamorous gowns and came and went as they pleased; they ate in private dining rooms and spent most of their time socializing. Men who belonged to the lowest class were forbidden from eating along with other students and wore clothing that set them apart. At Trinity College , for example, sizars the poorest group of students had to wait on their fellow students, ate their leftovers, and swept and rang bells in exchange for tuition.

The new rules prohibit practices that until now were only advised to be inappropriate. Faculty members are now explicitly forbidden to have sex with, or date, undergraduate students, and with graduate students under their supervision.

The university’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences Committee on Sexual Misconduct Policy and Procedures determined that the school’s existing language on “relationships of unequal status” was not strong enough. Harvard’s ban on relationships between faculty and undergraduates follows similar bans that have been instituted in other schools, including the University of Connecticut, Arizona State University and Yale University.

A Yale spokesperson told Bloomberg that several faculty members had been disciplined since the ban was instituted in
